Library
Director Sue Burton was pleased to present the award for "Outstanding
Friend of the Library" to our own Ed Rakowski. This annual award is
given by the Virginia Public Library Director's Association.
Ed volunteers two days a week to the library's Wilson Room. He also
serves on the Friends' board, with responsibilities for membership
related activities such as billing and recording. His wife, Rose Mary,
ably assists in the distribution of the correspondence and our quarterly
newsletter Friends' News. |

Virginia Authors Series
|
|
Our Virginia Authors Series
featured Thomas R. Garrett, co-author with Clay Shampoe, of Baseball
in Portsmouth, Virginia (2004), and Baseball in Norfolk, Virginia
(2003). |
 |
|
Tom Garrett, a Portsmouth native
and retired Principal in the Portsmouth City Schools, provided an informative
and entertaining description of the history of baseball in Portsmouth. His tales
of the the rivalries between the Portsmouth and Norfolk baseball teams (and
fans) made major league cross-town rivalries such as Dodgers/Giants and
Cubs/White Sox pale by comparrison. |
