IRISH PEOPLE, IRISH LINEN
For 400 years, Irish linen was the premier industry of the island of Ireland. A new book by Kathleen Curtis Wilson, Irish People, Irish Linen (Ohio University Press, 2011) explores this history through art and design, architecture, technology, economic history, and cultural traditions.
The author will talk about her work with a media presentation on Tuesday, March 27 at noon at the Commodore Theatre in Portsmouth.
Wilson, who spent eight years traveling to Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland to conduct research, will share the fascinating story of spinners, factory workers, creators of fine lace, mill villages, the Titanic, airplanes and astronauts, high fashion, and unseen technological and medical issues of linen through the ages.
Her talk will be illustrated by lavish images of linen artifacts, some of which have never been see outside of private collections.
Wilson, who lives in Alameda, California, has also written extensively about Applachian textiles and currently is working on a novel set against a backdrop of early Applachian textile mills.
Lunch service will be available in the dining area of the theatre prior to the presentation, beginning at 11:00 AM until noon. The hour-long talk is free and open to the public.
Copies of Wilson's book will be on sale in the lobby of the theatre and the author will be available to sign them.
