The Friends of the Portsmouth Public Library (FOPPL), Inc. is a non-profit organization established in 1974.

FOPPL supports the Portsmouth library system by working with the Library Director to supply funds for programs, furniture, books, and library enhancements beyond the limits of city funding.

Monthly book sales, sustaining memberships, and gifts provide the monies for our gifts to the library.

We are delighted you visited our website! Please note our most recent newsletter, information on our book sales, upcoming events, and a description of our Sustaining Membership program. A membership form is available for printout.

We have a fund within the Portsmouth Community Foundation (PCF) to receive donations to our Churchland Library Furnishings Fund (CLFF).

• The PCF will hold all funds until needed.

Donations to the CLFF are also accepted in our Towne Bank account: Churchland Branch Furnishings, FOPPL, Inc.

FOPPL also:

• financially assisted in equipping the Esther Murdaugh Wilsom room where patrons research local history and genealogy

• provide funding for the children's summer reading program

• purchase machines and paper for all copiers and fax machines in Portsmouth's libraries

• collaborated with the Portsmouth Library Foundation to purchase and install a new security system in the main library

• meets quarterly at the main library (601 Court Street). Each meeting includes a presentation by a noted Virginia author, many who are native to Portsmouth
