About Our Book Sales
The Friends of the Portsmouth Public Library Book Sale has thousands of
books of all kinds (and some other merchandise such as audiotapes,
videotapes, LP’s, maps and Cliff Notes) available for sale each month.
We are fortunate to have permanent space in the basement of the Main
Library at 601 Court Street in downtown Portsmouth. This allows us to
organize and categorize our books for easier shopping than many similar
book sales. |

Our Pricing Policy
Our trademark is “Books By the Inch,” meaning that most books at the
sale are sold by stacking them on a ruled scale to determine the price.
For paperback books and magazines the rate is $.75 for 1-1/2 inches;
for hardback books, the rate is $1.25 for 1-1/2 inches. At these rates,
a customer can, for example, buy a stack of hardback books approximately
15 inches high for $15.00—less than the cost of one new hardback book in
a retail store. In addition to “books by the Inch” we have a selection
of recent releases, specialty books, and old and unusual books, which
are individually and very reasonably priced. |

How can we do this?
Our books come from many
sources, but all are donations. We receive books from the library, local
business and church donors, other book sales, and more. We receive many
books from our own Friends members. If you are unable to drop your
donations off at the Friends of the Library "one guy and a truck" will
be happy to help. You can reach Stormy Thorson by email at
The Pickup Truck or by phone at either 686-8034 or 737-2156.
The sale is organized and run entirely by volunteers. Proceeds support
our Portsmouth Public Library system.
